MARK HOSSEINI - VC '18Always be as prepared as possible.
megan k. hill - vc '18Never give up! Hard work and a positive attitude will get you farther than anything in this business.
adam girts - orchestra '18Go out there and try! You'll get knocked down for sure but keep trying! It may take 10,000 tries, but you'll learn from every one, and the 10,001st will make all the effort worth it.

schuyler thronton - orchestra '18 |
ADAM CANTOR - VC '18 |
katie beckvold - vc '18 |
Remember why you got into it! It's a very challenging and demanding field, but the rewards are great. I'm never happier than I am when performing. I get to do what I love every day, and as an added bonus, I get to work with (and make) my best friends!
Study as hard as you would for any academic pursuit.
Always be up for new opportunities, even if it isn't exactly what you wanted. You never know where they might take you. The best advice I've gotten is that no two career paths are same. So enjoy the path you're on.
why did you want to go into show business?
andrew buckley - orchestra '18Show business for me is a combination of two things I love. Performing on my instruments and making music and collaborating with some of the best vocalists, dances, and actors/actresses.
madison rice - vc '18Music has the power to changes lives! I feel so lucky to be a part of that.
josh warner - scenic designer '18Where else can you get paid to spend other people's money to make your own art?
sage prosper cobos - vc '18 |
JULIA ANNE COHEN - VC '18 |
RYAN BROWN - VC '18 |
Everything else seemed like death to me.
I can't imagine doing anything else but sing.
I love making people feel something. Maybe forget about their problems for a bit.
WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO DEAL WITH NERVES BEFORE A PERFORMANCE OR AUDITION?
ADAM GIRTS - ORCHESTRA '18 |
EMMA BARISHMAN - VC '18 |
Brianna Barnhart - VC '18 |
You don't. The nerves are part of the magic of being a performer, so I don't fight it, I embrace it.
I like to make myself a routine before the show. As soon as I get to the theatre, I check my props and start putting on my makeup. I also run through all of my lines and songs out loud. Then the fun part of my routine! I visit my friends at their makeup stations and we take pictures or sing Disney songs!
Physically exhaust yourself so you don't have any energy left to be nervous.
Schuyler Thornton - Orchestra '18 |
MEGAN K. HILL - VC '18 |
RYan Brown - VC '18 |
I try to concentrate on the fact that I get to do what I love every day as my job! I try to channel the nervous energy into excitement and remind myself that I'm nervous because I care.
Exercise! I do crunches right before a show to channel my nervous energy somewhere else.
Audition as much as possible. The more you do it, the easier it gets. Also remember that the people behind the audition table are, in fact, people. Same for audience members. They WANT you to succeed.
hOW DO YOU HANDLE REJECTION?
jOSH wARNER - sCENIC dESIGNER '18Let out your frustration. Did that? Great. It's now out of your hands. Move on to something you can control - your next interview. Focus on that.
MADISON RICE - VC '18Just remember there will always be more opportunities. No single rejection is the end of your career! Something else is just around the corner.
Adam Cantor - VC '18Know that there will always be a next time.
JULIA ANNE COHEN - VC '18 |
GEORGE MARN - VC '18 |
FRANCESCA NAPOLITANO - VC '18 |
You can't do anything about it. There is no need to waste energy on the "no," wait until that one "yes."
Just move on. Often times, it wasn't because of something you did.
Remind myself that I did all that I could in the audition and that the director’s choice isn’t personal. It’s also helpful to have supportive friends and colleagues to build you up and help you deal with rejection.
How do you handle mistakes in a performance?
KATIE BECKVOLD - VC '18I laugh at them - after the shock wears off, of course!
Mark Hosseini - vc '18Move on, continue as planned, and get it right next time.
sAGE pROSPER coBOS - VC '18I should just shrug it off until the performance is over and then work to fix whatever was messed up, but I'm not so easy on myself at times.
gEORGE marn - VC '18 |
Francesca Napolitano - VC '18 |
Brianna Barnhart - VC '18 |
Stay in the moment. Don't think about what went wrong, just think about what you have to do.
Accept that it happened and then move on! You can never let one mistake distract you from the rest of the show.
Keep going!
